Asbestos shuts down public swimming pool indefinitely
U.K. – There are no plans to reopen a swimming pool in South Wales after it was shut down two months ago due to asbestos.
During routine safety and repair work on the Llangeinor Pool in November 2007, workers found asbestos in the boiler room and heating system. The pool has been closed since.
After projected estimates of £25,000, Brigend County Borough Council cabinet members have decided not to go through with the asbestos removal. A key factor in this decision was that the Llangeinor Pool was already scheduled to be closed in October 2008 when the new Ynysawdre Swimming Centre opens. The council felt that the value of reopening the pool for a few months was not worth the high cost of the cleanup project.
More than 1,000 names were submitted to the cabinet in a petition to reopen the Llangeinor Pool. However, a council director said that a specialist company would need to be selected for the cleanup and that it would not be until March for the asbestos removal to be completed.
Coun Foley, the council cabinet member for leisure, announced that the building project for the Ynysawdre Swimming Centre was still on track to be completed in October despite a few issues on the site causing concern.
In the mean time the Brigend Swim Squad, which has over 400 members, has worked out agreements with the Maesteg, Pencoed, and Pyle pools to use their facilities for practice.
