Asbestos at a maternity ward causes scare for families
U.K. - News has been leaked that reports the presence of asbestos at Paisley Maternity. According to an insider, the material was found several weeks ago while renovation work was being done.
Families are outraged that they not been informed of the findings are worried about the dangers that the mothers giving birth and their infants may have been exposed to. Hospital officials maintain that there had been no risk of exposure.
The source also said that samples of the contaminated material have been sent off for testing. Crystallized asbestos had been found upon tearing down some walls.
He noted that he was also a father and felt that other parents like him have the right to know about such matters. He was also worried about the possibility that workers had carried materials they were not aware were contaminated into areas where mothers and babies rested.
A spokesperson for the construction company supported that hospital’s claim that there were no health risks to patients, visitors, or staff. He told the press that they had only found a small amount of low-risk asbestos tape inside the wall, which was located in an unoccupied area of the maternity unit that was being renovated. They also had a registered asbestos contractor collect air samples around the wall, which tested negative for asbestos fibers.
