Widow wins deceased carpenter husband's mesothelioma lawsuit

U.K - The widow of a deceased carpenter has been awarded £210,000 in a lawsuit over asbestos exposure causing his death.

Michael Scoble worked for 30 years in Borehamwood as a wood machinist, creating scenery and props for movies filmed in town for various film studios, including Cannon Film Productions, MGM British Studios, and several others. He had worked on movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Dirty Dozen, and Where Eagles Dare.

According to his wife, Michael was not told about the risks of working with asbestos at these studios and was never provided with proper protective equipment.

Although he had been exposed to asbestos working at all of the studios, since the lawsuit was over mesothelioma causing Michael’s death, only one company could be sued. Cannon was the studio selected.

The film production company has been out of business for many years so it was the company’s insurers that were taken to court.

It wasn’t until 1993 when the couple moved to Dorset that Michael was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He died in 2006 at the age of 66. Marilyn Dorset said he was in pain and suffered until the end.

Marilyn said Michael told her to pursue the case on his behalf. Although she would rather he be alive than have the money, Marilyn is happy that she won because she felt like she had avenged him. She also hopes awareness brought about by this case will urge other former set workers to get health checks for asbestos exposure.
