Asbestos discovered in demolished senior citizens’ center

Australia - The discovery of asbestos has caused a halt on the Cronulla Community Project. It has been more than two weeks since workers found the deadly substance following the demolition of a senior citizens center. A council spokeswoman said in a public statement that the people involved in the project had always been aware of the possibility that asbestos would be found.

The seniors’ center has been torn down and in its place a new community library and car parking building will be built. However, before construction can begin, the asbestos will have to be properly removed.

Officials said that they identified more asbestos after removing the ground slab which was the base for old building. The spokeswoman said they had followed the proper procedures in reporting the new findings and were ready to take the necessary steps to move forward once they receive advice from experts on how to handle it.

A report has been commissioned that will detail the steps needed to be taken to properly remove and dispose of the substance. Once the report has been approved by WorkCover, the asbestos cleanup project will begin, which is expected to be within two weeks.

WorkCover, a New South Wales governmental body responsible for managing the State’s workplace safety, injury management, and workers compensation systems, is working with the demolition crew to ensure that the matter gets resolved safely.
