Vale Royal Mesothelioma Deaths Beginning to Peak
In the four year period between 1985 and 1989 only five men died from mesothelioma in Vale Royal, a district of Cheshire. During the next ten years, the number of annual deaths per year quadrupled with 42 deaths reported.
But the largest increase occured between 2000 and 2004 when 31 deaths were recorded, a rate more than six times that of the original monitoring period. The trend is being repeated throughtout England and it may only get worse as experts expect the rise in deaths to continue despite bans on asbestos instituted nearly a decade ago.
The explanation for the increase is likely due to the long latency period between asbestos exposure and the appearance of mesothelioma. In most cases the gap between exposure and infection is at least 20 years which is the reason researchers are predicting that deaths will continue to increase for another decade before beginning to subside.
