County courthouse needs to get rid of asbestos before continuing repairs
Conway, AR – Estimates are in for the cost of asbestos abatement at the 73-year old county courthouse. The Safety and Environmental Investigations of Little Rock is estimating that the county will have to pay $50,000 to remove asbestos from the building.
The Budget and Finance Committee will meet to discuss how money will be raised for the project and when the cleanup process will start.
Repairs have already begun on the courthouse. In November it was voted that the county general millage tax be raised to finance repairs for the roof, plumbing, and electrical systems. Work on the roof has already been completed; however, before plumbing and electrical repairs can be done, asbestos has to be removed. Funds generated from the millage tax increase will not be finalized until all property taxes for 2008 are collected.
In the mean time, the committee is currently figuring out how much money will be carried over from the 2007 County General fund. The committee expects the county will possibly get a loan to cover the cost of the asbestos removal project and that the cleanup will begin soon. The county would look into banks around the county to find the best rate, and the loan would be paid back using the money collected from the millage tax.
The county will also consider applying for grants, such as the County Courthouse Restoration Subgrant which is sponsored by the state. The grant has awarded to 60 out of the 75 counties in Arkansas to help restore historic courthouses in their respective counties.
