Asbestos supervisor fired and tried in court

Auburn, NY - A man in court on January 25th for a small claims case brought against him by the county was also fired from his Building and Grounds job on the same day.

John M. Chick, a carpenter, worked as the supervisor on an asbestos removal job at the Board of Elections building in Cayuga County. The Building and Grounds Department, which he worked for, placed him on administrative leave over allegations that he used the county’s money to purchase $713 in personal tools. He has been on leave since December 26, 2006.

The BGD issued a statement on Friday that cited eight reasons for Chick’s termination. The list of reasons were:

While acting as supervisor on the asbestos removal job at the Board of Elections building, Chick had conspired to violate the federal Clean Air Act, a crime he admitted to in U.S. District Court in January 2007. The judge is expected to deliver his sentence in February. He could face up to five years in jail and be required to pay up to $250,000 in fines.
