Asbestos Campaigners Travel London
Members of an asbestos support group will be traveling from Yorkshire to London later this month to protest a ruling denying compensation to people with pleural plaques caused by asbestos exposure.
The protestors, some of which have been diagnosed with pleural plaques, are contesting a ruling last October by The Law Lords which said the formation of pleural plaques did not require compensation because it isn’t a disease. Pleural plaques are benign but there is a connection between their occurence and the later diagnosis of mesothelioma or asbestosis.
The protestors in addition to members of trade unions, health groups and law firms will meet January 29 at the House of Parliament to urge lawmakers to pass legislation reinstating compensation.
Lawmakers in Scotland have already submitted legislation to overturn the ruling and some members of parliament are asking the government to overturn the ruling nationwide.
