Asbestos Found in 124 Highland Schools

Scotland - The Highland Council downplayed a report showing asbestos was found in 124 schools by assuring parents that it posed no risk to students.

A newly published report showed asbestos is present in half of the area’s primary schools and 80 percent of secondary schools. Chrysotile was the type of asbestos most commonly found with other schools containing amosite (brown) asbestos and nine schools found to have crocidolite, often considered the most harmful form of asbestos.

The council responded to the report by saying that most of the asbestos has been removed or contained and that it posed no immediate risk for students. They added that asbestos found in each school has been carefully logged and that workers perform regular checks on areas containing asbestos.
