Australia: Asbestos Diseases to Peak Within the Next Decade
The Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation (ADRF) is predicting that cases of asbestos related diseases will peak in 2017 before they begin to slowly decline.
The projection is in line with similar estimates and predicts an additional 21,000 diagnosed cases of mesothelioma and asbestosis before 2060. A third of those cases will occur in New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, with the rest distributed in order of population among other states.
ADRF attributes most of the cases to industrial exposure from factories or asbestos mines with cases of second hand exposure from family members or the environment. The group hopes these projections will continue to draw attention to the health effects of asbestos exposure following the death of long time asbestos campaigner and member Bernie Banton.
