Bids open for asbestos removal project on a former gas station building

Warrensburg, MO - A building located at 9 Richards Avenue that formerly housed the Econo-Quick Gas & Carwash will soon be receiving an asbestos abatement treatment.

The Missouri Division of Environmental Quality recently approved a proposal for the cleanup project. Warrensburg will be responsible for hiring the company that will complete the building’s asbestos removal. Bids for the project are being accepted for the next 30 days.

Once the asbestos removal is finished, the building will be torn down, and two abandoned kerosene storage tanks located above-ground on the site will be removed. This will make way for another cleanup project to begin.

In 2001, the DEC worked to remove 12,920 tons of soil that was contaminated by a series of petroleum spills from two underground gasoline storage tanks. However, it is estimated that 1,500 tons of contaminated soil still remains on the site.

In 2006, as part of Missouri’s environmental restoration program, the town was awarded a $478,650 grant to finish the cleanup. That amount covers about 90% of the cost for the cleanup project, and the town will cover the remaining 10%.

It is not known what the Town Board has planned for the site once the cleanup is completed.
