Officer dies in a bizarre mesothelioma case
U.K. - Michael Jones, a retired police officer, passed away January 11th at St. John’s Hospice in a bizarre mesothelioma case. Jones was diagnosed in August 2006 with the disease after going to see the doctor for chest pains and breathing difficulties. A biopsy revealed that he had developed mesothelioma, a disease that is incurable and is typically a direct result of asbestos exposure.
The mystery, however, is how and when Jones came in contact with asbestos. He is allegedly the first police officer from South Yorkshire to die from the disease, which is more commonly developed by workers in the industrial field.
The only instance that his widow, Julie, could recall was a day about 20 years ago when Michael visited a garage shop that made car brake pads while working as a traffic officer. She remembers him talking about how there was asbestos dust in the air at the garage. Brake linings at the time were made from asbestos because of its heat-resistance ability, important under heavy braking conditions.
Jones, who was an officer for almost 30 years, died at the age of 49. The coroner who examined his body said the preliminary report showed that he died from mesothelioma.
