Asbestos supervisor sentenced for failing to complete jobs he was hired for

New Jersey – Branko Lazic, an asbestos supervisor, was sentenced on January 11 to six months home confinement along with three years probation. During his probation, he will not be allowed to do any work in the asbestos-abatement industry. Lazic is the owner of Bilaz Inc., an asbestos-abatement company that was subcontracted by RT Environmental Services Inc. to remove asbestos from Mattison Avenue Elementary School, a job which he failed to see all the way through.

Lazic was charged with violating the Clean Air Act, a crime he pleaded guilty to in June 2007. He admitted that he knowingly left the school while his workers were in the process of asbestos-removal and was well-aware that there was a possibility that they would not finish the job properly in his absence. RT Environmental had subcontracted his company to remove more than 600 asbestos-insulated pipes that were a part of the school’s original building structure. However, months afterwards, asbestos remains were found by janitors and teachers at the school. An investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency discovered that the job wa done improperly.

Mattison Avenue was reimbursed $14,000 by RT Environmental for asbestos-removal services, along with $15,124.50 for asbestos abatement consulting fees. The school was closed for a month while it hired another company to finished the job properly.

Lazic was required to pay RT Environmental $6,097 in restitutions. The court also mandated him to complete 50 hours of community service, all of which must be performed in the Ambler community in which the school is located.
