Victims Group Seeks Equal Payment

The North-East Mesothelioma Self Help Group is asking lawmakers to increase bereavement compensation for families in England and Wales. They argue that payments should be increased to the same level as those in Scotland.

The group said that regardless of where you live, the pain of losing a loved one is the same. They reinforced their message by creating a short film where group members discuss the pain of losing a loved one in addition to their financial burdens.

The film will be emailed to MPs later this week in hopes of pressuring them to introduce a bill for equal compensation. Spouses in Scotland receive up to £30,000 and additional payments can be assessed for other family members while the most families in England and Wales can receive is £10,000.

A bill was recently submitted to add an additional £1,800 for payment made this year but they argue the compensation amount is still insufficient.
