The Hire Vets First Program

The Jobs for Veterans Act was passed in 2002 to provide better employment opportunities for America's veterans.  The U.S. Secretary of Labor created the President's National Hire Veteran's Committee to promote employment of veterna to businesses.

In 2004, the President's National Hire Veteran's Committee launched a campaign called "Hire Vets First." At the heart of this campaign was a new website that was launched on Sept. 9, 2004, called www.hirevetsfirst.gov. This website is designed to be an informational hub for veterans looking for work, as well as a resource for employers looking to fill open positions.

Of America's 24.5 million veterans, 15 million are under the age of 65. Hire Vets First was created in an effort to help those veterans who are interested in a vocational life after the military to find civilian employment.

Hire Vets First, which is part of the U.S. Department of Labor, offers approximately 3,500 "One-Stop Career Centers." The career centers feature representatives whose primary responsibility is to connect employers with veterans looking for employment. The recruiting professionals at the career centers will help employers find local veterans who best meet their employment needs.

The One-Stop Career Centers also offer assistance to veterans looking for employment. The centers have "Veteran's Employment Specialists" who are available to help veterans find employment, acquire training and further their education. These employment specialists are called Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVERs).

Disabled veterans are an important part of the Hire Vets First program. The REALifelines Program offers wounded or disabled veterans benefits such as:

Disabled veterans are offered these job placement resources through the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP). The DVOP focuses on offering apprenticeships and on-the-job training for disabled veterans. The DVOP offers specialists who function as case managers for disabled veterans who are trying to find employment.

The Hire Vets First program is also affiliated with the Department of Defense (DOD) and America's Job Bank. The DOD offers a program to personnel prior to discharge from the military. It features a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) that offers job transition assistance to those who are facing the prospect of having to find civilian employment after their military career.

America's Job Bank offers employers and those seeking employment an online resource - www.ajb.org - for job placement, training and career counseling. Every veteran who registers on the America's Job Bank website will have his or her resume highlighted with an American Flag to increase its visibility and prominence.

Hire Vets First also partners with the Small Business Administration (SBA) - www.sba.gov - to help veterans secure loans in an effort to start their own businesses. The SBA also offers veterans assistance with planning for their small business or entrepreneurial idea.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - www.va.gov - also supports the Hire Vets First program. The VA offers support through a wide range of avenues, including training, education and counseling.
