Mesothelioma Researcher Receives Two Grants
Dr. Haining Yang was awarded two grants to continue her research into the mechanisms that trigger mesothelioma and how they might be used for earlier detection of the rare but often fatal cancer.
Yang was the recipient of a two-year, $100,000 grant from the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) and a two-year $120,000 grant from the Hawai'i Community Foundation's Leahi Fund.
Yang works as a scientist at the Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i and her work focuses on the cellular interactions between asbestos fibers and human mesothelial cells. Some of her published work includes a 2006 study which identified TNF-alpha via NF-kB as a possible source of oncogenesis for mesothelioma.
In addition she has been studying biomarkers that may lead to earlier detection of the disease and novel preventative therapies.
