ZenBio Awarded Phase II SBIR Grant for Cell Development
Zenbio Inc. has been awarded a grant by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to continue developing commercial applications for primary human peritoneal mesothelial cells.
The grant, worth nearly $2 million, was awarded by the National Institutes of Health and seeks to help the company develop cells in order to further research in cancer, obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Mesothelial cells line the peritoneum, pleura and pericardium as well as internal organs. The cells provide a smooth barrier that allows movement of organs and tissues and without these cell layers, your organs would grind against each other. In addition the cells play an active role in the body and produce some of the signaling factors for obesity and diabetes.
These cells are the starting points for mesothelioma and serve as attachment points for metastasizing ovarian cancer cells. The development and availability of mesothelial cells could provide a valuable tool for cancer treatment research.
