Asbestos being removed from Australian railway station as part of upgrade program

Work has been planned for parts of the Hurstville railway station as part of a multi-mullion dollar upgrade program.

The railway concourse will be closed off in certain areas beginning Thursday night and ending in early April to make way for asbestos removal work to be done. Asbestos had been used in the cement render on structural beams in the ceiling. If airborne, the substance poses a high health risk to the public.

Railcorp will construct sealed off partitions in these areas to prevent asbestos from leaking out, and work will be performed only at night by a licensed asbestos removal company. The workers will follow strict guidelines provided WorkCover, the Australian government authority that handles workplace safety, injury management, and workers’ compensation systems.

A spokesperson for RailCorp said that air monitors have been installed at the station. To ensure public safety, they will be continuously monitored from the start of the asbestos abatement until official clearance is issued for the site.

The Hurstville stations, with about 26,000 passengers travelling through it each day, is one of the five railway stations outside the city circle that receive the most daily traffic.

Other work planned for the upgrade include building two new lifts from the concourse to the platform, some changes made to the ticket office, and widening of the entrance and exit points at the station. The funding for this project comes from the Easy Access program.
