Painter dies from mesothelioma

U.K. – A widow is taking legal actions against United Utilities PLC on account of her late husband’s death from cancer related to asbestos exposure.

Thomas Minns of Carlisle, 83-years old, died in April 2007 from mesothelioma. He was reportedly diagnosed with the cancer in October 2005.

Mr. Minns was allegedly exposed to the substance during the course of his work as a painter and decorator for North West Electricity Board, which later changed its name to United Utilities. Mr. Minns was employed at the company’s Carlisle location between 1970 and 1974.

He had worked in the trade ever since he left the army in 1947.

David Mossop, Mr. Minns’ former co-worker, told reporters that the two used to work in the basement of the building where crumbling asbestos dust used to fall from pipes, and they had to clean it up before they could begin their painting. The pair, along with other painters at the company, also drank tea and stored materials in the basement.

Tissue samples taken from Thomas Minns’ lungs after he died showed that they contained asbestos. His widow, Freda, and daughter Julie were with the coroner when he recorded that Mr. Minns died of an industrial disease. He mentioned that exposure to asbestos can still cause damage to a person up to 40 years after they come in contact with it.

The former North West Electricity Board building in Carlisle has been closed for many years. In its place now sits the Carlisle Enterprise Centre.
