UK: Portsmouth Council Concerned Over Future Compensation Claims
The Portsmouth City Council is worried about the possibility of future asbestos compensation claims following a £250,000 settlement with a former city employee suffering from mesothelioma.
Council members are concerned because the city had to cover the full amount since it did not have employee insurance until 1978. Other former workers who develop mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases could see similar settlements creating a significant financial burden on the town’s budget.
The town insists his case is an isolated incident but with the lag time between exposure and illness there could be a number of additional claims. Portsmouth has previously settled with workers who developed pleural plaques but this was the first time the town had to settle a claim with an employee who was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
The former worker developed the fatal cancer during a 40-year career while performing maintenance on city properties and believes other employees are at risk for developing the same condition.
