Barrow Asbestos Deaths Highest in Britain

Asbestos exposure led to more deaths in Barrow than anywhere else in Britain between 1985 and 2004. During those years 158 people, many of them former shipyard workers, lost their lives to asbestos related diseases creating the highest per-capita death rate in the country.

The findings were announced as part of a new campaign that has been created by the Health and Safety Commission to reinforce the fact that asbestos, despite its ban, is still the leading workplace killer for tradesmen. HSC officials report that every week six electricians and three plumbers die as a result of asbestos exposure.

The HSC warned that the dangers of asbestos are still present and cautions workers not to let their guard down. While asbestos has not been used in construction since 2000, the material is still present in many buildings and workers should take extra precautions if they think they may come into contact with the material .

Asbestos Support Group Wants to Compile Employee Record

The Barking and Dagenham Asbestos Victims Support Group is trying to find former industry and maintenance employees who may have been exposed to asbestos.

The group is trying compile a record of employees who may have come into contact with the carcinogen in order to offer support and medical advice to people who are at risk of developing asbestos diseases.

In order to raise awareness within the community, they are organizing a meeting on February 27 at Barking Town Hall to coincide with the National Action Mesothelioma Day. The event will feature guest speakers including Dagenham MP Jon Cruddas, medical experts and current mesothelioma sufferers.

Anyone suffering from an asbestos disease or people who may have been exposed to asbestos including children whose parents worked with asbestos containing materials are asked to attend.
