Special events held to mark Action Mesothelioma Day
York, UK – A candlelight vigil was held yesterday in memory of victims who died as a result of asbestos-related illnesses.
As part of Action Mesothelioma Day, the York Asbestos Support Group, whose members consist of mainly relatives of the victims, coordinated the vigil outside the T&G union’s offices. The group’s main missions are to provide members with support from people who are going through the same experiences and campaign for justice over issues such as compensation.
Kim Daniells, the YASG’s founder, said the vigil was a tribute not only to residents of York and surrounding communities but also everyone across the UK as well as those around the world. During the vigil, the participants also reflected on future victims, many of whom may be unaware that they are currently being exposed and are at risk and others who know they have been exposed but will not know for certain until many years down the road if they will develop an illness.
In Leeds yesterday Kimberley Stubbs, who lost both her mother and grandmother to asbestos, also held an awareness event to mark the national awareness day. Her mother died ten years ago after fighting and winning a landmark case for compensation against JW Roberts, an asbestos company that had a factory near her house which was responsible for hers and Kimberley’s grandmother’s exposure to asbestos.
The event was hosted by the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund, named after Kimberley’s mother and of which Kimberley is a chair member. There were special speakers and attendees had the opportunity to meet and share their experiences with one another.
