Swimming pool workers not told by managers of asbestos risk
Durham, UK – Managers at the Bishop Auckland swimming pool are caught in a scandal involving employees at risk for asbestos exposure.
The Wear Valley District Council has launched an investigation into why workers at the swimming pool have been working in the presence of asbestos without protective equipment for five years. In 2001, the pool’s management was given an official asbestos inspection report warning about the dangers of working with the substance.
Council chairman Peter Kemp revealed some findings at a public meeting last night. According to information gathered during private interviews with staff members, some of the testimonies provided information different from other evidence that were attained.
After asking everyone on the staff if they were aware that an asbestos survey had been conducted in 2001, the only people who indicated that they had knowledge of it were the facilities manager and the quantity surveyor. However, the council had other evidence that showed that everyone on the staff had been told about the survey. The council is now going back to review the evidence again.
It was learned that the technical director of the Wear Valley District Council at the time had commissioned the asbestos report, which was given to the pool’s facilities manager upon completion. The asbestos issue was reportedly never resolved.
However, Mr. Kemp also mentioned that there was a lot of missing information from the evidence, but in the end, it was the responsibility of the councilors and CEO to watch over the health and safety of its workers.
The investigation team will publish a report with its final conclusions for the public in the next few months.
