Laramie County residents hope for a bill that will take care of their asbestos problem
Cheyenne, WY – Laramie County residents are hoping that a new piece of legislation, Senate File 27, will be approved that will address the asbestos-laden lot on Lupe Road.
Bonnie Chapman and her husband, whose home sits off of Lupe Road, saw the debris pushing up against their fence line one day, and they had air samples tested for asbestos. When the result came back positive, the couple brought it to the attention of county commissioners. It was then that they found out the county had no power to help them.
After an investigation, which ended in mid-2007 and had lasted almost a year, confirmed the presence of friable asbestos, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality said the responsibility for the cleanup rested with the lot’s owners. The DEQ sent a letter requesting the owners to have it done. However, Laramie County commissioners had no authority to get involved and enforce the act.
According another neighboring resident of the lot, the site contains somewhere between 75 and 100 semi-truckloads worth of construction debris which contain asbestos. Senate File 27, if passed, will grant county officials the authority to regulate health and safety nuisances such as this.
Local residents have faith that if the county had the authority, it would handle this problem for them just as it had in a similar case 20 years ago. At that time, there was a dumping issue with a salvage yard, which caused a potential fire hazard, and commissioners intervened to get the problem resolved.
