UK: Bridgend mother finds asbestos on her property
UK – A Bridgend mother arrived home with her children to the horrifying scene of a bag of asbestos waste lying on her garden path.
Mrs. Gill Morrissey, a mother of three, ages 6, 15, and 16, found a red, sealed bag inside the fence of her house when she was walking to her doorstep. The bag had been labeled as containing three different types of asbestos. She told reporters she then did an Internet search with the asbestos codes on the label and found that one of the types increased a person’s chance of developing cancer by 500 times.
The waste is believed to have been left behind by contractors who had been doing work on a nearby home. Mrs. Morrissey said it scares her to think what would have happened if she had not found it when she did or if it had been dropped elsewhere in public. She imagined the possibility of curious neighborhood children opening the bag or a stray dog tearing through the packaging and scattering the material.
Mrs. Morrissey contacted the West Lothian Council and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency to bring the incident to their attention.
A spokesperson for the council said it will investigate the matter. In a statement, he said a subcontractor had found a small amount of asbestos during the inspection of an empty home on February 13, and the substance was safely contained and stored at the property. On February 14, a licensed asbestos contractor was sent out to uplift the bags, and on February 15, the bags were removed from the site.
He said Construction Services will work with contractors to get an understanding of the incident
