U.K.: Raising awareness of the dangers of asbestos through planting trees

Plymouth, U.K. – A tree planting ceremony is scheduled for February 27, which coincides with national Action Mesothelioma Day, at Saltram House.

Jackie Lowe, the organizer of the event, also started the Roger Lowe Asbestos Mesothelioma Campaign in memory of her father who developed the cancer. Mr. Lowe had been exposed to the substance during his career as a dockyard worker. He passed away in December 2005 at the age of 68. The campaign’s mission is to create a support network for victims of mesothelioma and their families, raise funds for medical research of the disease, and raise awareness of the cancer.

Lowe, said she is committed to raising the public’s awareness of the health effects caused by asbestos exposure.

Victims of asbestos-related cancer and their families will gather at 10:30am at Saltram House to plant a commemorative Lebanon Cedar to generate awareness for asbestos-related conditions, which have affected a large number of people in their community. According to scientific findings, Plymouth is the largest ‘hotspot’ in the UK for conditions caused by asbestos exposure. Between 1985 and 2004, it is recorded that 320 people have died as a result of mesothelioma.

The largest numbers of cases of the cancer are expected to be seen between 2011 and 2015, based on data that suggest the disease takes 30 to 40 years after exposure to appear.

Other activities planned for the event include a free walk-in clinic, which covers topics such as medical, legal and benefits advice, and a film that gives extensive information about mesothelioma.
