New York high school experiences asbestos scare
Dobbs Ferry, NY - Work to remove asbestos from Dobbs Ferry High School's auditorium began Friday, December 26.
Asbestos was found in the auditorium in November during a routine inspection. Immediately, the room was sealed off according to a district official.
Asbestos Corp. of America was contracted to perform the abatement, which will take place over the winter break. The work to remove the asbestos will cost the school district nearly $23,000.
Two areas of the auditorium will need to be cleaned - the overhanging deck where the asbestos was discovered and parts of the balcony wall. Sylvia Fassler-Wallach, the district's director of finance and facilities said the areas around the removed sections will also be cleaned and that the workers will perform all the repairs needed.
Following the removal, the company would also properly dispose of the asbestos and conduct air quality tests to make sure all traces of hazardous material is gone. The work is scheduled to be finished by December 30.
This isn't the only recent asbestos scare. According to Ms. Fassler-Wallach, there was a case asbestos leakage in two small sections of the auditorium last month when water managed to seep through a brick wall and caused damage resulting in the leak. She said it was uncertain how long the damage had been there before being discovered but assured that the wall has been fixed since. She also added that students and staff had not been exposed, and test results showed only trace amounts of asbestos in those areas.
