UK Pharmacies unite to generate awareness and raise funding for asbestos research
Wearside, Tyne and Wear, UK - Pharmacists and their families and friends gathered for a fundraiser walk held in honor of Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
The walk, coordinated by the two local community pharmacies, was started with the purpose of generating awareness and raising money for research in the asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma.
Asbestos, praised and widely used in the last century due to its heat resistant properties, was a key material in building ships in the North East's shipping industry in the mid-1900s. As a result, the region has one of country's highest death rates from asbestos-related illnesses.
The rate of reported cases is expected to rise in the years ahead since people who have been exposed to the mineral do not experience symptoms until several decades later.
Once diagnosed after already showing symptoms, victims have on average between one and two years to live. Organizers of the walk say that the earlier the disease is detected, the higher the probability is for successfully treating it in patients. No cure has been found for the cancer. Even if all signs of the disease is gone from a patients' body after successful treatments, there is always a possibility that it may re-emerge down the road so regular monitoring is essential.
In addition to promoting the walk, the pharmacies are also selling special key rings to raise money for funding research.
