Charleston Navy Yard
The Charleston Navy Yard is located on the Cooper River in the city of North Charleston, South Carolina. This Navy Yard was founded in the beginning of the 20th century and was primarily used to shipbuilding activities throughout World War II. The Charleston Navy Yard was originally operated as a dry dock, but as the times changed, so did this Navy Yard.
By the middle of the 20th century, the Navy Department had decided to reorganize some of the activities at Charleston by creating a Naval Base right in the town. The Charleston Navy Yard was an area that became part of this new Naval Base. Although there were many postwar changes happening to the Naval Base, the Charleston Navy Yard remained a very active facility throughout all of it. This base was one of the most prominent places where returning ships were placed for storage and by the middle of the 20th century, the Navy Yard was designated as a repair and overhaul area for submarines.
Throughout the first half of the 20th century, there were over 4,000 people employed at the Charleston Navy Yard, but by mid-century this number nearly doubled to 8,000. By the 1970s, workers became somewhat worried because the Navy Yard was experiencing a drought in work and was cited for its lower than usual productivity. Those running the shipyard made efforts towards picking things up and it got better by the end of the Vietnam War. By this point, the Boston Navy Yard had been closed which resulted in more work for the Charleston Navy Base in order to pick up the slack.
The Charleston Navy Yard, which was responsible for repairing, overhauling and maintaining Navy ships, officially closed its doors in April of 1996. At this time, it was leased to Detyens Shipyards Inc., but the Charleston Navy Yard remains a very important part of history.
