UK: Youth club reopens months after asbestos scare

Wiltshire, UK - A youth club is planning to reopen next month after it was closed nearly three months ago following the discovery of asbestos in its building.

The Bowerhill Youth Club's organizers said they had to tap into the club's savings to redecorate the club once asbestos cleanup had been done. Treasurer Janet Jory said the club had just decorated the place last year but had to allocate another £300 to do it again.

Fortunately, the club was able to recuperate the cost after being awarded a grant from Melksham Without Parish Council.

She said the club's attendees were sad when they heard the news of the club's temporary closing and regularly asked organizers when its doors would reopen. Organizers spent several hours every week contacting various people to make sure the building would be ready to reopen on August 6.

A West Wiltshire District Council spokesman said the council currently leases the building and that during a survey of all of the council's buildings earlier this year, asbestos was discovered at the youth club. The building's owner, Wiltshire County Council, agreed to pay for a licensed asbestos professional to perform abatement on the structure.

The club is open to children 11 to 14 years of age and each session costs £1. The activities available for use include access to playing fields, netball court, Nintendo Wii, a pool table and an on-site tuck shop.
