UK: Asbestos scare stops refurbishment work in Doncaster

A sudden stop was put on all refurbishment work on hundreds of homes across Doncaster following two significant asbestos incidents.

Around noon on July 22, about 600 homeowners were left with half-completed work when contractors working on behalf of St. Leger Homes were ordered to immediately stop work. Officials in charge said the work was stopped so that health and safety checks could be performed to make sure the proper procedures were being followed in regards to refurbishment work.

Residents are outraged that their homes were left in unlivable conditions after the workers were told to just make the properties safe before they left. Many are also furious at the lack of information they were given about the suspension of the work. According to residents, the council sent out letters which provided no concrete details, with only a promise to keep them updated.

Prior to the stop, days earlier many pensioners were evacuated from their flats on short notice after asbestos fibers were discovered. Many of them are still in staying in temporary accommodations.

Local councillors have expressed their disappointment with the way St. Leger Homes and the council had handled the situation. They have made sure that residents at least had access to washing and cooking facilities. However, information from the council's responses has been contradicting.

The Doncaster Council and St. Leger Homes have released a joint statement which said that residents' safety is their biggest concern, and they've ordered a 48-hour halt to all current work to review health and safety procedures.
