Union Supports Asbestos Mine Cleanup

The Australia Manufacturers Workers Union plans to campaign for the cleanup of the former Woodsreef asbestos mine.

The abandoned mine lies to the east of Barraba, a town of 1200 people located 300 miles northwest of Sydney in New South Wales. Between 1970 and 1980 the mine produced nearly 500 thousand tons of chrysotile asbestos and at its peak employed half of the town.

It was shutdown following safety concerns and since then it has fallen into a state of disrepair becoming a popular site for vandals. Residents however are more concerned about the leftover mine tailings and possible environmental contamination.

Some former mine employees have been diagnosed with asbestos related diseases and environmental monitoring has been proposed to see whether the site continues to pose a risk to residents.

Hunter New England Health conducted safety tests but has refused to make their findings public. The Department of Primary Industries is in charge of the analysis and says it will continue to investigate the situation.
