Brown Praises Labour MP as "People's Champion"
The funeral of former Labour MP John MacDougall (Dec. 8, 1947 - Aug. 13, 2008) drew a large crowd including Prime Minister Gordon Brown who proclaimed him as a "people's champion."
Macdougall, a former boilermaker, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2007 and had a lung removed in an effort to treat the cancer. After a long fight he eventually died from the effects of the disease but his commitment and fighting spirit were honored during his funeral services.
Brown eulogized the long time labour party member as a friend and servant of the people who fought for the rights of miners and the elderly during his legislative career and service to the communities of Fife.
Brown commented that MacDougall never gave up his fight and praised his participation in a clinical trial to treat mesothelioma. MacDougall worked in a variety of trades and was likely exposed to asbestos during his youth when he was employed as a riveter at the Rosyth Naval Dockyard.
