Cancer Diagnosis From a Single Drop of Blood?
Could future cancer patients be diagnosed with only the help of a single drop of blood or a very tiny tissue sample? According to a new study performed at the Stanford University School of Medicine, the answer is yes.
In the study, researchers were able to detect proteins associated with cancer in samples as small as one picogram (one-trillionth of a gram). While these proteins are specifically related to blood cancers, the Stanford team is optimistic that the method could eventually be used for a wide range of cancers.
Presently, biopsies are required to validate the presence and malignancy of cancer. Such a method requires anesthesia and, often, invasive surgery.
While an easier method for diagnosis is certainly beneficial, the new method could also lead to improved treatment monitoring and effectiveness. As it stands now, oncologists must wait several weeks after beginning a new treatment to determine if the tumor is shrinking and the method of attack is working. However, the new technique performed at Stanford was so effective, that even small modifications in cancer-related proteins could be detected. Such a fact suggests that cancer treatments could be more quickly and effectively monitored at the cellular level, simply by analyzing a blood sample of the patient.
The new protein-identification method has shown promising results, but the researchers stress that more research is necessary. Still, oncologists and patients alike can remain optimistic in the fact that yet another advancement in cancer treatment may soon be widely available.
