Elderly victim of mesothelioma seeks compensation to provide for his family
Hartlepool, Cleveland, UK – An elderly man has launched a suit against his former employer for £200,000, claiming the company is responsible for causing his terminal cancer.
Ernest Gooding, 66, is suing Telent and its predecessor Associated Electrical Industries, and he hopes to use the money to provide for his family after his death. He believes he was exposed to asbestos, which led to his mesothelioma, while working there from 1957 to 1965 and at a different company later on.
Mr. Gooding, after reporting feeling weak and tired, was diagnosed with the lung cancer in January 2007. In July, doctors told him he only had about 18 months to live.
According to the suit, he states that Telent and ASI never warned him about health risks associated with asbestos. The factory where he worked contained steel pipe racks lagged with the dangerous substance.
Mr. Gooding, who stayed up many nights putting together lists of things he wanted to do before he died, said the news was crushing. He hopes to gain justice by winning compensation to give his family a better life. The family members include his wife Cherry, 61, daughter Lisa Jones, 36, son Carl Gooding, 41, and their son and daughter respectively.
Mr. Gooding says he and his wife now make the most of everyday he has left.
A spokeswoman for Telent confirms that the company, because of its long industrial heritage, does face similar injury lawsuits from time to time. However, she said she could not comment on any specific case.
