Family forced to live in one room because of asbestos
Worcestershire, UK – The presence of asbestos, damp and mold have forced a Redditch family to live in only one room of their home for more than three weeks.
Andy and Debbie Taylor, along with their 19 year old son, have been spending all of their time and doing all their activities in one room of their house for weeks now. The house is in such bad conditions that Mrs. Taylor said she had to throw away some clothing and personal possessions away that had been tainted and no longer safe to keep.
She said the mold problem has been there since the family moved in a year and a half ago but it’s recently gotten out of hand. The house’s ceiling is falling apart and is causing a health risk because the insulation material for the house contains asbestos, which is being released as a result of the ceiling’s collapse.
Mrs. Taylor, who agreed a mutual exchange for the house so she could live closer to extended family members in Worcester, said she never would have made the deal if she had known what she knows now about the house.
She said the house needs to be condemned, and she has been constantly calling environmental health council to request help, hoping the council would buy her family a new house.
Although Mrs. Taylor said no one has gotten back to her, a spokesperson for the council said no one was at the house when officials came at the scheduled time of inspection. He added that the council has repeatedly tried to rearrange a date without success and was waiting to hear back from her.
