Asbestos prevents residents from collecting their possessions

Framingham, MA - Residents from a Temple Street apartment building are still waiting for word from management that they can gather their belongings two weeks after a fire engulfed the complex, leaving asbestos exposed in many places.

Resident Laura Fritz said she still hasn't been allowed in to claim her things and neither is her insurance adjuster. Without his appraisal of the damage to her possessions, she won't be able to collect insurance money on any of her destroyed items.

JPI Management Co., the building's owner, has given warning that anyone who gets caught entering will be arrested since the company is still working on removing the asbestos. They added that it's also a public safety issue as exposure to asbestos can lead to very serious health issues.

The state has granted JPI an asbestos abatement permit valid until June to perform asbestos removal work on the complex. However, before the public can reenter the site, tests will need to be perform to confirm that it is safe.

The fire department has revealed that the cause of the fire was a plumber's torch inside a bathroom closet. The estimated damage caused to the building by the fire totals about $3 million.

Fire officials claimed that the building built in 1966 lacked sprinklers and did not comply with the state's fire code established a decade later. However, it was granted a grandfather clause for compliance and allowed to continue operating.

The company is planning to do renovation on the building, including installing a sprinkler system, new fire alarms and additional improvements. When asked if these changes will take place at other buildings owned by the company that were built around the same time as this one, a top JPI executive responded that they will look into it.
