Asbestos may affect students' exam performance

Downham, UK - An asbestos scare at a high school has many students worried about their GCSE exam performance.

Almost 30 students at West Norfolk High School were attending their Physical Education class when a health and safety inspector discovered asbestos in a broken ceiling panel in the boys' locker room during a routine check. The inspector had the area sealed off immediately, and the boys were not allowed to retrieve their belongings. Many of the Year 11 students had their coursework and study materials for the GCSE exams in their lockers and are now concerned about their performance on the upcoming exams, which will play a big role in determining their future.

West Norfolk Principal Ian Bloom told reporters that he's working with the GCSE examination board to ensure that the boys who were affected will not be disadvantaged by the incident.

An asbestos specialist team is trying to scan the students' course material left in their lockers and is planning to give them digital copies of their work on a memory stick. Staff members are also asking other students in the same course to help the boys affected by lending them notes.

Parents are furious that their children are at risk for asbestos exposure and blame the school for not removing the asbestos earlier while they were doing renovation work. One father said his son was devastated because he wanted to do well on the exams to get into Cambridge.

The school has apologized to everyone involved and said its insurers would reimburse students for everything they lost. It also assured everyone that tests were performed by licensed professionals who found the amount of asbestos fibers in the air were below statutory levels.

The GCSE exams will take place in two weeks.
