Summit Hill, PA - The city has set aside $130,000 from a $3.7 million building project to cover the cost of removing asbestos from the current borough hall, soon to be demolished.
The project calls for the current building, home to the borough's offices, a fire station and a police station, to be razed and a new borough hall, fire station and the shell of a community center to be built separately. Work has begun on the new buildings and is expected to be finished in July, which is around the same time the old building will be demolished.
Joe Weber, president of the Borough Council, received six bids last week for the asbestos cleanup work. He said the lowest bid so far is for $128,824, submitted by Sargent Enterprise, Inc. and the highest bid was for $208,000 from Plymouth Environmental Co. Inc.
The council had expected the cost of abatement to be high, but luckily Sargent's bid was within the budget set aside for the work.
Pennsylvania State Represenative Keith McCall helped the borough attain a $1.25 million grant to help fund the building project. In January, the borough made plans to issue $2.15 million in bonds to finance the project also. However, according to city officials, citizens may have to absorb some of the cost of paying back the bond issue through a 2009 rise in property tax.
