UK: Residents want to stop an asbestos waste station from being built near their homes
Chesterfield, Debbyshire, UK – Outraged residents are circulating a petition aimed at stopping plans to build an asbestos waste site very close to their homes.
The residents have launch the Residents Against Asbestos Waste (RAAW) campaign to stop Aspect Contracts, a licensed asbestos consultant and removal company, from transforming the former Haydon Concrete depot to a ‘waste transfer station.’ They’re angry that their town is becoming the dumping ground for everyone else’s waste and fear the station will put the community at risk for health problems.
Aspect, a long-standing member of the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association, maintains that the waste would be properly contained and wouldn’t pose a threat to anyone. A company spokesperson assured the media that all asbestos debris are inspected, packaged, and sealed according the legal safety requirements.
The purpose of the site is to store asbestos-tainted construction and demolition debris until they are moved to approved landfills such as the one in Poolsbrook. Uncontaminated waste would be sent to recycling centers. The company estimates that three-quarters of the site would be occupied by asbestos-tainted materials while the other one-quarter would be non-hazardous materials.
Aspect is aware of the public’s concerns regarding the dangers of asbestos, and the company has stated that it welcomes any questions people may have.
The deadline for submitting the RAAW petition to the council is May 1.
