Killeen Set to Demolish Asbestos Laden Building

Crumbling asbestos-tainted building to be demolished

Killeen, TX – A long standing building in downtown Killeen is set to undergo asbestos removal before demolition work begins.

The building, former site of the Adams Shoe Store and the First National Bank before that was condemned last year by the city.

A city councilman said the building is in such bad conditions that it would eventually fall down on its own if left unattended to. However, that would be dangerous to the city’s inhabitants because the building contains asbestos, which would be released during the building’s collapse.

The building’s owner doesn’t have the funds to pay for the removal of asbestos or for tearing down the building. The estimated cost for the project is about $55,000, which the city will take upon itself to pay for to protect its people. If the owner doesn’t pay the city back within a certain amount of time, a lien will be placed on the property.

City officials have discussed enhancing the downtown area by turning the site into a downtown park if the city does acquire the land.

The building’s neighbors, including the newly-opened “New York Flavor”, are welcoming the demolition project for the crumbling building, which they call an eyesore. They believe the area will see more growth once the building is gone.

The city council approved the budget for the project in February and if everything goes according to plan, the asbestos removal and demolition will be completed in early May.
