Six Nations schools shut down over health concerns
Brantford, Ontario, CA – Two Six Nations immersion schools were closed last week after an inspection found that the schools were not safe for use.
The closing of the two schools, Kawenni:io Elementary School and Kawenni:io / Gaweni:yo High School, forced about 110 students to travel to another school to attend class.
Officials at Polytechnic, the Six Nations post-secondary school, have opened their doors to students from these schools. Preparations for the move began today and students are expected to start attending classes at Polytechnic on Monday.
The principal for both schools, Isabel Jacobs, and the chairman of the schools’ board of director, Allan Miller, met with about 60 parents and staff members to discuss many topics of concern, one of the most important being the presence of asbestos-containing insulation. Other issues included mold, plugged toilets, filthy bathrooms, and a lack of safety measures to protect students from harm.
It has been known that asbestos was the reason why the regular schools chose to leave the buildings years ago. Safety experts have assured everyone that the asbestos located around pipes and in floor tiles pose no health risks because they are contained. However, to alleviate the enduring worries of parents and teachers, a rush was placed on the asbestos testing that occurred last week.
Teachers and students have been complaining about experiencing sore throats, headaches and respiratory problems. One parent whose children have asthma and other health conditions is insisting that the school get fully inspected.
Parents have volunteered to help with the schools’ cleanup, which Mr. Miller said is much needed.
