Asbestos found in children’s toys

Los Angeles, CA – An advocacy group against asbestos said Monday it is suing several companies after discovering the presence of cancer-causing asbestos in certain children’s toys.

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court and Los Angeles Superior Court against CBS Broadcasting, Planet Toys Inc. and several retailers for allegedly selling contaminated toys based on the “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” TV shows.

In the federal lawsuit, ADAO claims CBS and Planet Toys made false announcements that led consumers to believe the toys were safe for to play with although tests showed otherwise. Tremolite, a highly dangerous form of asbestos, was reportedly found in the toy kit’s fingerprinting powder during safety checks.

According to the state lawsuit, the companies also broke California law by not notifying consumers about the presence of the hazardous substance.

Planet Toys recalled the toys last year, but according to a statement posted on its Web site, the company found no asbestos after running several tests on its “CSI” kits.

ADAO is demanding that the companies offer consumers a refund for the product and pay for the asbestos tests that were conducted on the toys. The organization also wants the companies to pay for any asbestos-related medical expenses, as well as money in damages and relief, of those who have been exposed to the substance.

CBS and Planet Toys have not publicly commented on the legal action by ADAO.
