Asbestos to be removed before demolition of a Michigan YMCA building
Ann Arbor, MI – Plans have been finalized to demolish an old YMCA building to make way for a new establishment.
However, before demolition work can begin, the building has to be cleansed of all asbestos material. Yesterday afternoon, the crews began preparing for the abatement process by slowly and carefully dismantling the studio floor of the YMCA building.
According to Project Manager Adrian Iraola, the cost for the asbestos removal is estimated to be about $118,000, and he expects that the cleanup process will start as early as the end of the month.
The Downtown Development Authority has received six bids for the demolition project of the site, which is owned by the city of Ann Arbor. The DDA will hold a special meeting next Wednesday to discuss and come to a decision on which of the six companies who submitted bids will receive the contract. The bids range from $362,912 to $872,276.
As a safety measure, the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority has decided to temporarily close the bus bays and covered waiting areas near the site.
The demolition project is expected to be completed in June of this year. The DDA wants the project to be done before the start of the Ann Arbor Art Fairs, which take place in the summer.
The city council has not decided what will be built in the YMCA building’s place. Thus, once demolition has finished, the site will temporarily be converted into a surface parking lot.
