A ceremony is held in memory of a leader who fought against asbestos
Rochdale, UK – Friends, family, and colleagues gathered in the Rochdale town center last Wednesday to pay tribute to a former councillor as well as 2,000 asbestos victims. The event was scheduled to coincide with National Action Mesothelioma Day.
Abdul Chowdry, who died in a road accident in July 2007 at the age of 54, was a national health and safety commissioner who was very outspoken against the use of asbestos. He once campaigned against a plan to turn the site of his former workplace, an asbestos factory, into a 600-property lot.
Along with over 50 family members and many of his close friends, several politicians attended the ceremony, including the mayor, a former Manchester Lord, and a council leader.
Attendees recalled how they were shocked and devastated at the news of his death. He was a different figure to different people, though always in a positive way. Mr. Chowdry was described as a caring friend, dedicated leader, and great family man. He was remembered as someone who “stood up for what he believed in to protect all the people of Rochdale.”
Jason Addy, a member of the Save Spodden Valley Campaign, paid tribute to Mr. Chowdry in front of the entire crowd and vowed to continue promoting awareness of the dangers of asbestos.
A moment of silence was held in his memory. Friends and family members were pleased to see so many attend the ceremony.
