Citizens discuss their asbestos experience at a public meeting

UK – A public meeting was held last week at Barking Town Hall in which people discussed their tragic stories of how asbestos had affected their lives.

The Barking and Dagenham Asbestos Victims’ Support Group (BAD Asbestos) hosted the event on Wednesday, February 27 to coincide with National Action Mesothelioma Day.

The meeting began with good news from Member of Parliament Jon Cruddas who announced that the organization had been awarded £10,000 in funding from the Primary Care Trust. The event continued with attendees openly sharing the experiences they and their family had had with asbestos.

An ex-carpenter shared the sad tale of how his mother died from mesothelioma as a result of having been exposed to asbestos when washing his work clothes. He explained how he felt responsible for her death when the coroner told him how she had come in contact with the substance. She developed the disease 18 months before he did.

The chairman of a laggers’ union told the attendees of how 58 members out their 380 had developed an asbestos-related illness, and 23 of them have died already. One man had committed suicide as his disease worsened. He saw how his brother had suffered and died from the same disease, and he didn’t want his wife to have to see him go through the same experience so he hung himself.

Another man who had taken boxing lessons at the Cape Asbestos Factory when he was a kid also developed lung cancer from exposure there.
