Asbestos contractors competing for Pennridge school contracts

Bedminster, PA – The time has proven to be right for the Pennridge School Board to award contracts for repair and renovation projects. Contractors have been competing for the contracts and some bid proposals have been submitted that are well below the cost estimates that the board had been expecting.

Eight companies submitted proposals for the asbestos removal project at Bedminster Elementary School, which has about 400 students ranging from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. Asbestos has been found throughout the school, with the majority discovered in windows, floor tiles, insulation material, and heating systems. Bids ranged from as high as $275,000 to the low of $75,527, an amount about $30,000 less than the board thought it was going to see.

The abatement is part of a larger $2.9 million renovation project planned for the half-century old building. Other renovations include replacing old items such as windows, boilers, water pipes, and classroom heaters. The last time the building saw renovation work was back in the 1980s.

Jeff Loeffler, District Facilities Director, believes that due to the currently weak state of the economy, buyers are at an advantage. There are smaller budgets and fewer work requests out there so companies work are willing to lower their fees to compete against their rivals.

School officials will to come to a decision on awarding the asbestos contract this month. The removal project is expected to start after the school closes in June and be finished by August 22.
